WSC Apprentice Success Story

Age 23

Refit Manager

Josh started at Wight Shipyard in September 2017 at 16 years old to complete a Marine Engineering L3 apprenticeship. This was at the start of the Red Jet 7 build which allowed him to experience the different trades as the build progressed. After 4 years within the company, he was able to achieve L4 Higher apprenticeship in engineering. He then continued as a Engineer for 6 months before becoming the Engineering Department Quality Supervisor.

After completing this role for a year and creating new processes and procedures for the company, he was offered the role of Refit Manager, working within the Project Services department. At the age of 23, Josh now oversees all refit projects, repairs and aftersales at Wight Shipyard. 

 

Josh found completing an apprenticeship a fun and exiting way to get into the industry and progress at such an early age into a solid and stable career. One piece of advice he would give is always believe you can achieve.

Apprenticeship Routes and Information

There are various routes into a career at WSC however joining as an apprentice is a excellent pathway as it enables you to learn on the job.

 

Apprentice Support

WSC operates an apprentice mentoring programme to ensure that they are effectively supported to learn the skills and complete work on time. As part of this programme, apprentices are assigned a specific person who will support them on their learning journey. In addition there is an Apprentice Coordinator who liaises with the training provider and mentor to ensure they remain on track.

  • Metal Fabricator - Standard Information HERE

Level

Apprenticeships currently offered are all level 3 qualifications.

Duration

Generally apprenticeships are 42 months plus 3 months for the end point assessment (EPA) period however it can be completed in less time depending on the individual and the rate that they can evidence the knowledge skills and behaviors (KSB's) outlined in the apprenticeship standards and record the target number of hours of 'Off the Job Training'.
